The Mayors Duck Race 2023
The Mayor of Whittlesey Charity Duck Race held on Easter Monday was, once again, a fantastic success, despite the day starting off cloudy with some heavy showers, the afternoon turned out sunny and was very well supported.
All 1000 duck tickets were sold, selling out only moments before the start of the race. Hope there were not too many disappointed people.
Andy with ticket (duck number) 451 scooped first prize and £50. Second prize was Duck 385 belonging to Mary Jane who won £25 and 3rd place and £10 went to duck 99 Chris Osler. The ducks entered the water at Briggate Bridge on Ramsey Road and travelled close to 100m having to negotiate the bend in the Bower. Cheered on by a huge crowd, the ducks were encouraged down the river in near perfect conditions by the hose pipes of Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue – Whittlesey Station, to be greeted at the finish line by Canoeists Andrew and Frankie Roddham. The Mayor Cllr David Mason congratulated everyone for participating and also thanked all those who helped sell the tickets, those who fed, nurtured, trained and transported the ducks, St John Ambulance, the Fire & Rescue team, Whitt the Duck, Freddie Johnson and Robert Windle of Fenland Youth Radio for their support and Whittlesey Veterinary Centre for the use of their car park.
